For parents, carers, and mentors This is a framework, not a lecture, to help your teen think through their choices while riding. Whether it’s a quick ride to school or a trip to the shops, these conversations could prevent life-altering mistakes.
1. What do you think is the biggest danger when riding an e-scooter or e-bike?
Tip: Let them reflect instead of jumping in with warnings.
2. How visible do you think you are to cars, especially at night or in bad weather?
Tip: Visibility is a key risk—especially with quiet, fast-moving scooters.
3. What would you do if your helmet was missing or didn’t fit?
Tip: Talk about habits, not just rules.
4. Have you ever ridden on the road or footpath—where did you feel safest?
Tip: Explore their perspective before offering advice.
5. Do you know the road rules that apply to e-scooters and e-bikes in our area?
Tip: Most teens don’t, and the laws keep changing.
6. What would you do if your friend dared you to go faster or try something risky?
Tip: Social pressure can be stronger than logic—help them prepare.
7. What’s your plan if the battery dies, or something breaks while you're out?
Tip: Safety includes preparation, not just the ride itself.
8. Do you feel more in control riding alone or with a group? Why?
Tip: This opens the door to talk about distractions and showing off.
9. Do you ever ride while wearing headphones or checking your phone?
Tip: Bring this up gently—most people assume it’s harmless.
10. What would happen if you hit a pedestrian or a car hit you?
Tip: This isn’t to scare them, but to shift from “It won’t happen to me” to “What would I do if it did?”
🚦 Why This Conversation Matters
E-scooters and e-bikes are fun, fast, and freedom-giving—but they’re also powerful. One mistake, one distraction, or one overlooked rule can change everything.
